Another department when it comes to hotels / establishments and a very important one is room department / housekeeping .

When guests come to stay in your home, making them feel at home and comfortable is the first order of business. While your home isn’t a hotel and you shouldn’t have all the amenities of one, there are a few tips you can consider to make your guestroom as comfortable and inviting to guests a possible.

Hm , is there anything more exciting then looking forward to see a room in a hotel /establishment you’ve just entered …I don’t think so !

Just imagine having a very long flight / trip to your holiday destination… countless hours , too many people around …all you wish is a quiet room , a relaxing shower…

Here are a few tips about what a Cabin Attendant/Housekeeper/Room Attendant  should do , basically a Job Description Purpose of the Role:

One of the most important things one should remember is TO SMILE ! Even if you see a guest / client that’s too sleepy to answer back….smile anyway and say “Good Morning!”….and He /She will remember… as little as it may seem to be , the smile , the small fine chocolate on the pillow in the evening , the fresh flowers , the crisp towels all that make a guest / client remember the stay and YOU !

I‘ve seen on various cruise ships guests / clients that go to their cabin and when they’re approached by the Room Attendant there is a sudden smile and a “How are you !? ..nice to see you back here ! How have you been , How is your child doing ?!All of a sudden one realizes that the guest / client and the Room Attendant have met before !There is a bond established between them , the employee knows already what the guest / client wants …the habits and so on

….and then again , it all starts with a SMILE ! ….

THAI_hostess3_smallONLY once have I had to fly with Thai Airways and let me tell you the Air Hostess smile is priceless !

The SMILE should pe present everywhere : Bar , restaurant , Hotel …and in the air

Clean & Fresh

There is nothing more inviting than crisp, fresh and soft bed linens to slip into at the end of the day. Be sure your guestroom has fresh sheets, pillow cases and comforters or blankets for your guests. If no one has slept in the guestroom for some time, you might want to freshen up the bed with a new set of linens and dust off the blankets and throws.

A light sritz of a soft fragrance or some fabric freshening spray can bring a room back to life after being empty and unused, as many guestrooms are between guest visits. If the weather is nice, open the windows to bring fresh air and sunshine into the room to air it out before guests arrive.

Towels & Toiletries

If you have a guestroom that has its own bath or uses a common bath that you don’t use regularly yourself, you’ll want to be sure there are fresh towels and useable toiletries available for your guests. If the guest bath is attached to the guestroom, leaving clean and fresh towels in the guest bath is the best choice. If the bathroom is a common bathroom for the house, then leave the fresh towels on a dresser or table in the guestroom, so the guests do not have to worry or ask for fresh ones.

Another important toiletry that is often overlooked but should be included in a guestroom is a drinking glass, for brushing teeth or other toiletry needs. Pre-packaged new toothbrushes, small bottles of shampoo and conditioner, new disposable razors and other minor things a guest might forget to pack are nice to keep on hand.

Clean Drinking Glass

It might not be something one would ordinarily think about putting in a guestroom, but there is a reason hotel chains put drinking glasses in the bathrooms. Whether for brushing teeth, a drink of water at night, soaking lenses or dentures—you name it, there’s a need for clean glasses in the bathroom for your guests. Disposable cups are acceptable, and there are manufacturers who make dispensers made for bathrooms that dispense small cups for bathroom use.

Trashcan

Guests probably won’t want to leave their guestroom in the middle of the night to toss something in the trash, so it’s nice to keep a trashcan conveniently located in the guestroom, especially if there is no private bathroom in the guestroom.

Enjoy the Visit

Guests will be comfortable in your home as long as you are welcoming and inviting, so don’t feel you have to spend huge amounts of time preparing your guestroom. Instead, simply make sure things are clean and fresh, a few niceties if you can spare them, and your visitors will enjoy their visit and be comfortable.

How to Prepare a Room for a Guest With Cat Allergies

You are having guests over and all of the plans are set. Then, you hear the four words that just about every cat owner dreads, “I’m allergic to cats.” Now you have to take a trip to some stores and “cat proof” your house. You have to get a few supplies in order to thoroughly prepare a room for an allergic guest, since cat hair has a tendency to get everywhere. Otherwise, you will be plagued with a sneezing, wheezing guest who can’t get out of your house fast enough and might even cut the trip short.

Instructions

Take all cat-related items out of the room, including toys, cat beds and scratching posts.

  1. Sprinkle the carpeting in the room with a pet hair and dander lifting carpet powder. Wait a few hours (or overnight if possible) and vacuum the carpeting thoroughly.

  2. Open all windows (no screen) and turn on a clean fan pointed to the window to move cat hair that is flying around in the air out of the room.

  3. Wash the curtains that will be in your guest’s room or completely replace them with new curtains.

  4. Wash the bed linen in hot water. If possible, just purchase a brand new set of linens for the guest and put them back up when they leave for all of your future allergic guests.

  5. Vacuum any couches or other cloth-covered seats in the room. Use Static Guard Cling Spray to get leftover cat hair off of the furniture. You can also use a rolling lint remover to pick up stray cat hairs.

  6. Wipe down the television, VCR and any other electronic components with an anti-static cloth and multi-purpose cleaner, as cat hair tends to lodge itself into the grooves of electronics. Be sure that every surface in the room is free from dust and hair.

  7. Put a box of allergy medicine in the room before your guest arrives. This way, if your guest has an attack, he can get immediate relief.

  8. Do this to the bedroom where your guest will sleep, the living room area where you guest will most likely want to relax and the bathroom. Explain to your guest that these are the only three cat-proof areas of the house anywhere else and they are at risk of having an allergic attack.

How to Prepare For Overnight Guests

  1. Launder the bed linens including the comforter. We know, it’s pretty obvious but you might be surprised at how often these major details are overlooked.

  2. Provide extra blankets and pillows in the room so your guests can make themselves as comfortable as possible without having to ask for anything.

  3. Offer towel sets in the guest room or show the guests where towels are located in the bathroom.

  4. Have a basket of travel-sized toiletries available for guests if they forgot something: soaps, deodorant, disposable razors, toothpaste, floss sticks, shampoo and lotions.

  5. Pt a simple but fragrant floral bouquet in the room and provide a couple of magazines for guests to enjoy before lights out.

  6. Offer a simple variety of continental breakfast foods such as cold cereal, boiled eggs, bagels and cream cheese, fresh fruits, juice, coffee and tea for your overnight guests. Prepare a breakfast quiche and freeze it until your guests arrive for a more substantial breakfast meal if needed.
